Carlos Arzate & Ryan Alfred

  • El Crisol Bar 403 North 6th Avenue Tucson, AZ, 85705 United States (map)

Beloved Tucson songwriters Carlos Arzate and Ryan Alfred will celebrate their decade of collaboration on SAT Dec 7 with a stripped down night of song-sharing at El Crisol (formerly Exo Bar, behind Exo Coffee). The two, who have been working together since 2009, will present a collection of original material, new sketches, and a few choice covers, including appearances by a few special guests.

Tucson native Carlos Arzate has been a standout member of the Arizona music community since the 90's, first known for leading bands like Innisfail and American Android with his huge voice. While those bands were known for their loud, confrontational sound and message, he nurtured a deep love of soul, folk, Norteno, and what is broadly called Americana, influences that finally found a home in his solo project, Carlos Arzate and The Kind Souls. The voice is still huge, but these songs also make space for a quiet, yearning, and at times sweet side, passionate stories about social inequity, border realities, family, stuggle, and triumph.

East Coast transplant Ryan Alfred moved to Tucson in 2009, having fallen in love with the city after a tour stop at Hotel Congress. Ryan has toured the world as a bassist with Tucson luminaries like Calexico and Run Boy Run, been a touring sound engineer for bands like The Jayhawks, The Swell Season, and Nick Lowe, as well as a producer for Ryanhood, Grace Rolland and, yes, Carlos Arzate. He is also the songwriter for Sweet Ghosts, his project with Katherine Byrnes, where he explores themes of connection and alienation in a sped up world against a backdrop of acoustic instruments and subtle synthesizer coloration.

The two met late in 2009 at an American Android concert at Plush (RIP), which led to a few gigs with Ryan filling in on bass for that band. "I remember wondering what that amazing voice sounded like when it wasn't competing with the wall of drums and guitar." says Alfred, who invited Arzate to perform a solo acoustic set opening for his band Sweet Ghosts, a first for Carlos. That performance led to many shows, hours on the road, and ultimately 3 Alfred-produced studio albums for The Kind Souls, most recently 2018's "Camaleon". This show is a celebration of that shared experience, bringing everything back to what initially brought them together: the voices and the songs.
