“Taft is the project of Austin-based singer/songwriter and former Lomelda member Taft Mashburn, and they’ve shared their latest single “Winters,” along with its music video, premiering exclusively at Paste. “Winters” is taken from their forthcoming third album, Goodnight, Plum, out on Feb. 22 via Cosmic Dreamer, and it follows their previously released single, “Rooms.”
There’s a graceful majesty and arresting melancholia to “Winters.” It won’t take very long for Mashburn’s striking falsetto and aching keyboards to seep into your inner core. His fragile croon is soul-stirring enough on its own, but the addition of a ravishing web of piano, atmospheric keyboards and off-the-wall percussion raises the track’s emotional impact at least tenfold.
The riel Sturchio-directed video features Mashburn wandering through a wooded landscape for deep contemplation and a chance to reconnect with nature. “Winters” is defined by nothing if not its humanity, and this video’s intimate perspective and therapeutic, earthy color palette convey that painfully gorgeous humanity.” -PASTE MAGAZINE
“Austin-based singer Taft delivers a six-minute soundtrack of beautiful sonic exploration in his new single “Rooms”. Listening to this ethereal piece, I imagine myself spinning slowly within several different rooms of my memory. The slow, mesmerizing instrumentals leave me utterly enthralled.
“Rooms” is a part of an upcoming album Goodnight, Plum following in the footsteps of Tdnp, released in 2017. The new project was recorded entirely live in-studio featuring musicians Andrew Stevens, Josh Halpern, Jeff Ratner, and Sam Pankey on instrumentals. The soaring vocals make "Rooms" the perfect introspective piece to lose yourself in. Taft has penned an entirely new world to explore, making the anticipation for Goodnight, Plum overwhelming. The single pulses and grows and pulls listeners through its length. Taft has proven himself to be a creative genius in "Rooms", and I am shaking with excitement at the prospect of an entire album.” EARMILK
Jess Matsen is a Tucson, Arizona based songwriter that has been performing solo in town for several years, as well as performing with local group Rough Nite. His intricate guitar fingerpicking serve as the perfect skeleton for sometimes ragged, sometimes velvet vocals to be draped upon. Jess's lyrics trip in and out of consciousness, sometimes meandering through a dream and other times sitting up and spooking you with a phrase both lucid and surreal. His latest record, Parts & Labor, adds woozy synths and a clacking percussive backbone to the already burgeoning menagerie that resides in Jess's skull.
